Know Your Audience
A lot of people start with demographics. Male or female? Married or single? But, I suggest something a little different. Think about your passions and your expertise. Now, who needs that?
Who do you help?
If your blog is about Southern weddings, your reader is probably in her 20s, soon-to-be-married, and living in the South. You’ve got her basic demographics, now get inside her head. What does she watch on tv? What’s her favorite drink? She loves sweet tea and Sonic happy hour, right?
If your blog is about organizing kids toys, your reader is probably 25-35, married, with small kids at home. She probably loves coffee, and wears a messy bun. She wonders how the world got by before the invention of the Magic Eraser. She knows how to look hot, but usually feels like a hot mess. She craves order and peace, but secretly loves chubby sticky fingers.
If you really want to relate to your audience, you’ve got to understand who you help. Her demographics and her psychographic (what’s in her head).
Know Your Value
Now that you know what your unique voice is and who you’re speaking to, you can determine what value you are bringing to the world. What problems do you solve?
Find the intersection of your expertise and your reader’s pain points and voila! That’s YOUR VALUE!
This is so critical, because this is what you “sell”. As a blogger, you are offering most of your value for free–as free content, but you’re still “selling” your content in a way. (You’ll need to know more about this when you apply for sponsorships.)
Know Your Brand
Your brand is more than a logo.
It’s more than a tagline, a color scheme, or even graphics.
All those things are part of the tangible experience of your brand, but the intangible is essential to understand. Your brand is how people feel after interacting with your business or blog. It’s what they’ll remember about you.
Coca-Cola is one of the most recognizable brands in the world. It’s more than the script logo or red colors. Their brand is fun, summer-time, laid-back, cool, nostalgic. You know what it feels like to interact with Coke. It’s such a powerful brand that people even incorporate it into their home decor! They want to bring the “Coke feeling” into their lives.
These 6 items are the foundation of a powerful blog or business start up.
You know the role you’re meant to fill. Who you will help and how you will help them. What you have to offer and how you will package it in a way that resonates with your customers or readers.
Getting this right from the beginning will take you further faster!
The rest is just details.
But, those are kind of critical too. Now that you’ve got the massive stuff figured out, you need a guide to help you organize your blog and actually connect with people.
