I LOVE Dr. Seuss! When I was little, I wanted to be him when I grew up. When my second daughter was three years old, she could almost recite The Cat in the Hat word for word. She was adorable. We decided it would be her 3rd birthday party theme. As it turned out, pink, red, and aqua was an… Read More
They're growing up so fast!
You have a lot of dreams and goals, but nothing is more important in your life than your family. Sometimes, it feels like we are hustling so hard to accomplish all we need to do that we forget to stop and just enjoy ourselves along the way.
My family has created habits of making memories that stand as mile markers in the mind.
Special occasions--even on ordinary days--that remind us of the joy we have together.
As homeschoolers, we are almost always in each other's presence, so it can be challenging to feel like "family time" is special. One way we do this is by creating special theme nights and celebrations around holidays, even silly ones like Groundhog Day!
Of course, the foundation of our family is our marriage. My husband and I have been through periods where we felt like roommates, present but disconnected. Life, busyness, exhaustion, even television can get in the way of maintaining a healthy marriage. We combat that slow decline with regular date nights. We plan weekly quite evenings at home where we just talk or play a board game, and monthly dates where we go all out (or stay in) with a special theme!
If you're around our family for very long, you'll soon learn that we go all out for birthday parties! It's not essential, of course, but we really have a good time with it! If your family loves themed parties, you'll enjoy seeing some of the creative ways we've celebrated our kids' birthdays. Fun Fact: With 4 kids, aged toddler to teen, I've thrown over 30 themed birthday parties!
I hope you find inspiration for your Family Fun times to create memories and grow your relationships.
I think of it as an insurance against my kids thinking all I ever did was work on the computer and teach them school. :)
I started planning my daughter’s 11th birthday party even before she was born. I was introduced to the wonderful wizarding world in 2000 and was well past my own 11th birthday…with no letter from Hogwarts. I knew her 11th birthday would be the year we would go all out and create all our favorites from the Harry Potter world! … Read More
When I was 16, I worked at a florist’s shop. I will never forget taking orders for Valentine’s day. We sold chocolate dipped strawberries that year as an add-on gift to the bouquets. Three of us employees sat for hours on end gathered round a Crock Pot of melted chocolate as we prepped order after order of strawberries. And the… Read More
When I was about 19 and in college, my mom and I were chatting on the phone one day when she told me about this amazing book she had been reading called Harry Potter. “It’s a children’s novel, but you would enjoy it. I like it!” She sent me a copy. Amused at the whimsy of an adult woman sending… Read More
I used to groan when I heard someone repeat the oft-shared advice for married couples to have date night. Making it important took all the fun out of it. Not to mention, by the time we planned a night out plus baby-sitter we were looking at at least a hundred bucks. Try doing that four times a month as newlyweds…. Read More
Did you know that gingerbread has a spiritual side? Baking and eating gingerbread men at Christmas isn’t just about having more cookies. You can actually use the gingerbread to teach your children and others about the spiritual significance of Christmas! How to use gingerbread to teach about Jesus I used to think gingerbread was boring, dry, and no fun at… Read More
